Danger of Tanning Beds - Tan Salons a Hotbed of Lax Practice

Sunbed operators need to clean up their act.
During these gloomy winter months the thought of a sunbed can really appeal. At least you can pretend it's summer even if you can't get a natural tan.
But sunbeds are not suitable for everyone - people with Type One skin that burns easily and doesn't tan shouldn't go near them. Sunbed operators have a responsibility to make this clear. They also need to follow other procedures to reduce the risks.
But a recent Consumer survey of sunbed operators exposed lax practices and poor safety precautions.
There is a joint New Zealand and Australian standard on the use of sunbeds (solaria) for cosmetic purposes. The problem is that the standard is voluntary - it's up to individual operators whether or not they comply with these guidelines.
