Danger of Tanning Bed - Kids Warned of Tanning Beds

Nova Scotia already has the second-highest rate of skin cancer in Canada, so we shouldn’t allow children to increase their risk by using tanning beds, Canadian Cancer Society officials said Friday.

They called on the next provincial government to follow World Health Organization recommendations and ban children under 18 from artificial tanning beds.

"That age is when the risk is greatest," said dermatologist Dr. Richard Langley, chairman of Sun Safe Nova Scotia. "There have been multiple studies that have indicated that artificial ultraviolet radiation can increase the risk of skin cancer . . . at least twofold."
